Last week the Selwyn College Concert Band and Jazz Band performed at the annual KBB Festival  hosted at the Holy Trinity Cathedral and St. Marys’ church.  141 ensembles from more than 51 schools performed during the week.

The Jazz Band’s performance was outstanding.  It was precise and very musical with many of the band members playing solos throughout the set.  The adjudicator made particular mention of the strong rhythm section and the chosen repertoire.  Many thanks to Hamish Arthur for his incredible work with these students.

From 141 ensembles the Jazz Band was awarded the ‘Chairpersons Command Performance Award’ which meant that the band was invited to perform at the Gala Concert.  The Chairperson’s Award is awarded to an ensemble that brought something unique to the Festival.

The Jazz Band also received a Gold award with a mark of 90%. The adjudicator, Roger Manins commented that the band had ‘great groove’ with ‘excellent brass phrasing’ and he enjoyed the ‘vocal scatting’ from our vocalist Ruby Wills. There were 48 Jazz Bands performing at the festival.
