Our Cycling Club started in 2017 and is run by very supportive parents. The club provides an opportunity to introduce students to road cycling and develop their riding and racing skills.
Students race in the College Sport Auckland time trials at Pukekohe during terms 2 and 3, the North Island School Races in Cambridge and the individual Championships in Auckland.
With the club now having been going for four years, there is a mix of novices through to very competitive riders, and new riders are always welcome. The club is very welcoming of new riders and has a very supportive culture, and enjoys fun trips away to the various events outside of Auckland.
Selwyn College will look to enter the following events in 2022:
- College Sport Auckland Team Time Trials (Sundays Terms 2 & 3)
- North Island Road Racing Championships, 9-10 July, Cambridge
- Northern Tour, 3-4 September, Auckland
The cycling club have a wind training session and an early morning road ride around the local area each week, beginning in term one.
Cyclists pay $70 to be included in the Team Time trial team and additional costs are assessed on a per event basis.
Skin suits for racing are hired out to riders for the year (approx. $40 charge). Riders need to supply their own bike, and helmet. There are a number of second hand bikes available around the local area that members of the cycling club can assist new riders to find. Lights are required for the early morning rides.
Parent assistance is crucial to the ongoing viability of the club, particularly cyclists who can accompany the students on training rides in the mornings and help transport bikes.
See the Sports Office for more information.
All students interested in cycling should see the friendly Staff in the Sports Department for more information.
