As a result of their success at The Big Sing, the Selwyn College Chamber Choir was invited to perform at the Cadenza Festival this week in Rotorua, along with 14 other top schools from the Upper North Island.
The choir travelled to Rotorua on Sunday and then rehearsed and performed in the Energy Events Centre to an enthusiastic audience. They also had workshops on three challenging new works and were supposed to perform these pieces as a combined item on the final night. However, due to the Covid alert level changing, this event was cancelled.
We are delighted to learn that the choir was awarded a 2nd tier award - ‘Korimako Award’ (bellbird). The adjudicators comments included: ‘a stylistic interpretation of a beautiful piece’; ‘good unison singing; ‘I love your soft singing’; ‘a very powerful performance, with plenty of energy and emotion, bravo’.
It was a very special three days with a fantastic group of students who sang; celebrated music making; challenged themselves with a Latin piece; interacted with students from other schools and just enjoyed each other's company. It was a surreal drive home on Wednesday - returning to Auckland at Level 4. The roads were very quiet on the way home but everyone enjoyed a picnic lunch in a carpark to finish the trip.
Thank you to our wonderful choir director Sarah Radford who has worked tirelessly with this wonderful group of young people and our parent helper, Ann Oliver, who came along to drive a mini van and support the group.
