Totara Learning Centre
Welcome to the Totara Learning Centre
TLC students are first and foremost Selwyn College students. We are a model for inclusive education.
Our students are included in all aspects of mainstream learning with support and are also involved in all aspects of Selwyn College life.
TLC students are offered total or partial inclusion in mainstream classes with support. Core subjects are also taught within the TLC by specialist staff. Programmes are differentiated to ensure all students achieve success.
Our TLC students are also in a House and take part in inter- house activities. They are encouraged to join co-curricular activities including clubs, sports teams and cultural groups.
This environment encourages positive student relationships across the wider school community.

Special Life Wheel Tool
We use this special interviewing and coaching tool with students and their families to provide a framework to discuss hopes, dreams and goals and develop meaningful steps towards achieving these. This life wheel is used to assist with the planning of Individualised Education Programmes (IEP)
We have a team of Therapists (Occupational Therapist, Speech and Language Pathologist and Physiotherapist) providing assessment, intervention and strategies, working closely with the Teachers and Teacher Aides. Sessions are one to one or in groups as required. Groups run by the Therapists include Transition and Life skills, Mindfulness, Colours of Sexuality, Balance, Strengthening and Fitness Our Therapists also liaise with other services as needed, for example Transition Co-ordinators, GPs and wheelchair and seating services.
In this way we seek to create a supportive, nurturing and fun environment that provides opportunities to help our young people to become confident, connected and actively involved lifelong learners.
Parents/caregivers of prospective special needs students are invited to phone the Director of the Totara Learning Centre for an appointment on 5219610 extension 661
