Last week, for the first time ever, Selwyn had Girls’ and Boys’ teams compete at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Ultimate Frisbee Championships, which were held over two days in Taupo. The Girls’ Team performed superbly and placed 3rd overall, losing to the eventual New Zealand champions, Hutt Valley High school.
Mackean Stevenson, along with fellow U20 National Training Squad players Brianna Murgatroyd, Jess Cook and Braden Jones, was an inspiration and earned the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award, which was well deserved.
Selwyn Boys placed 7th overall but were very competitive in every game they played. The standard of play was very high and very even – any of the teams from 3rd through to 7th could have beaten each other on the day.
Ian Stewart, coach and Selwyn Sports Coordinator summed up his observations, ‘I was very proud of the way each squad came together as a team and represented Selwyn College both on and off the field. Both teams had a mix of Year 13s and younger players and I loved the way the senior students inspired and supported the younger players. The Selwyn players improved throughout the tournament and rose to the challenge of playing Ultimate at a high level’.
Our warmest congratulations to all of these Ultimate sporting stars.
