This year, the Selwyn College Environmental Council took part in the annual Ōrākei Moth Pod Competition. Over the course of 6 weeks we removed an outstanding total of 7,884 pods and vines! Superstar collector Rowan Scott (Year 10) and his family removed 5,389 of those pods and vines.

On Wednesday 8th June a prize-giving was held at Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei‘s Pourewa Community Gardens on Kepa Road. Here, Rowan Scott received the $350 top prize for most pods collected in the Secondary School category. He was also gifted a $50 spot prize for his creative video which accompanied his grand total. We are so proud of you Rowan!

In second place was Selwyn’s ‘Pod Patrol’ who collected 1,637 pods, and in third place was Selwyn’s ‘Team 2’ who collected a total of 408 pods and vines.

The Enviro Council would like to thank everyone who contributed in the competition. It feels great knowing that there are less moth plants suffocating native bush and trees in Ōrākei because of our efforts. We hope that next year there will be less for us to collect!
